Not bad for 5 bucks (on sale).. Update: Developer listened to feedback and added v-sync. Now the game looks great and I've changed my review to a recommend. This game seems very well-made and fun so far. I would love to be able to recommend it to people. Unfortunately, there are two things that are currently preventing me from doing that.1) There is only one resolution option: 640*480. That's it. Not really sure what that's about. They should have given us two or three different options at the very least. One seems pretty ridiculous. Especially one that small.2) There is no apparent way to enable v-sync. The resolution problem I could actually live with. No v-sync? That's a deal-breaker. All that horrible screen tearing makes this lovingly-crafted, beautiful game look nothing short of atrocious.I'm hoping the developer can resolve these issues with a future update. Just like the screen is when I try to play this game, I myself am torn. I want to recommend it. But until they give us v-sync (and maybe some other resolution options), I just can't.. No Commentary Quicklook:https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=adg_hl7I1e8First Impressions:Great soundtrack, well written dialog, tight remappable controls and plenty of reasons to backtrack through levels. Difficulty scaling seems well thought out and I felt no reason to smash my gamepad (yet). Few minor issues with screen tearing, 640x480 res max and no widescreen support. If you can live with that, so far it's a nostalgic trip down platformer lane. 2 paws up.Source/Price:Copy was provided by Degica (publisher)Current Price: 8.99 | Worth: 5-10More Gameplay: (not stretched!)https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=IVVuc5q5Xd8. This game clearly has some high production values with the spritework and music. However, way too many uninteresting cutscenes ruin the experience along with the terrible level pacing. A sort of Rondo Blood style of game (which is being generous considering how much better RoB and Odallus, for example, are than PR+), you can play through the levels multiple times with story progression power-ups to obtain additional hidden items that weren't previously accessible. It's sort of a forced way to get you to replay the levels because most of the bits are obvious and in plain sight instead of trying to be remotely sneaky about how to unlock those areas. The main portion of the game is just dragging for me and I'm not even two hours in, according to Steam. Really sad, as I'd heard a lot of good things about this game; but unfortunately, I guess that was mostly from people that go for graphics above all other aspects of the game's design. I can't recommend unless you like poor/mediocre versions of the truly brilliant games this one is trying to mimic.. Basically a metroidvania adaptation of Phantom Blood except Jonathan Joestar is a rabbit and Dio is cursed into a humanoid turtle instead of vampire.. A decent little platformer. It would be a lot more enjoyable if you weren't stopped every two screens to read a small novel's worth of dialogue. You ever play a game that has a lot of dialogue in it, and you get the sense that the only reason the dialogue is there is because the developer didn't know that you can make a game -without- dialogue?Like, take the bit near the end of Sonic & Knuckles, where you have to fight Knuckles (if you're playing Sonic), and then when you beat him Robotnik comes in and swipes the Master Emerald. And then Knuckles opens the secret back entrance for you. That last sentence alone inspires whole novels of fanfic BUT THE POINT IS! that Sega told a whole little story using just sprite animations. No need for talky boxes. Especially not talky boxes that presented dialogue one sentence at a time, so that by the end of a sequence your thumb has more blisters just from pressing the "Advance dialogue" button than from playing the game itself.Speaking of, the controls are mostly tight, the level design could use some tweaking (there's a couple of screen transitions where you'll walk right into an enemy if you're not already in the middle of a jump), the music isn't too repetitive, and there are enough save points scattered around to keep things from feeling unfair.. Great game in general. I've played through it multiple times. I'm posting this review to combat a few of the negative reviews; they aren't wrong in their criticism, but It's annoying to dismiss a good game because of some simple issues. This might be an issue of Steam reviews being binary (either thumbs up or down, no in between), but I'm leaving this anyways.First off, no, it is not a metroidvania style game. It is tagged as so in Steam, but it isn't and that is an error. It's at best a metroidvania-lite game. You can return to previous levels after you've gained some new abilities and access secret stuff you couldn't get to before, but it is not a free exploration game.As a platformer, I've played through it with two different controllers, and the controls are fine. I'm not sure where the criticism is coming from; the controls are tight enough for a platformer of this style. Maybe it's not Shovel Knight tier tight, but it's not at all garbage like a few complaints. It's fun to play in general.Story wise, the writing is good and the only reason not to like it is because you don't like the premise. That's a stupid reason to negatively rate something. The quality of writing and story is fine. The car level is stupid and out of place. I can't forgive that one. An annoying memory and reaction test at an attempt to mix it up that didn't work out. But honestly, if you play a lot of Steam platformers and metroidvanias, it wasn't that hard. I just finished Celeste (came out Jan 2018) and damn that was satisfying, but way frustrating. The car level in Pharaoh Rebirth just takes a little time to get down. But being a big fan of metroidvanias, platformers, and most of all a mix of both that has a story I get drawn in to, this is worth the door price. I liked the story and the game isn't unforgiving. If I were to compare it to another game, I would compare it to Shantae and the Pirate's Curse. Similar idea; mostly linear platformer with a few reasons to revisit already completed areas later on. Graphics are great: 9-9.5/10 for a pixel game.Audio and score are good: 8/10 for sure, maybe up to 9.5 on subjective liking of the tracks.. this is an excellent castlevania-inspired game (i'm not using THAT term) with beautiful sprite work somewhat reminiscent of metal slug and a fittingly amazing soundtrack. the gameplay is fine-tuned so that enemies pose a threat without being damage sponges, and there's a strong incentive to explore previous areas as they contain stat upgrades/collectibles/consumables that were previously impossible to access. the game is good at teasing you with inaccessible areas to keep you excited for the next ability you learn. there's always an urge to move on. to top it off, the boss fights are some of the finest in their field.there are only two downsides, and both of them are levels. one requires you to play as your turtle rival, who has a slightly different arsenal of abilities. it's not an awful stage but it isn't as well-designed as others and kind of throws off the flow. the other stage is almost completely on-rails with the exception of jumping, like the mine cart sections in donkey kong country. i appreciate the attempt at diversity but this stage is a complete slog and the only downright unenjoyable area of the game - why mess with a winning formula?pharaoh rebirth is a fairly short game clocking in around 8 hours, but with the exception of the two areas mentioned above (well, the turtle level is still fun in its own right) these are 8 solid hours of excellence. this is a no-brainer for $10 and it's baffling that it never caught on like other games in the genre.B+
